Since 1856
Our Story
One of the oldest continuously operating mutuals in Iowa — and still owned by the people it insures.
Neighbors helping neighbors — for six generations
In 1856, a group of German farm families near Walcott did something remarkable: they agreed to share one another’s risk, forming the Mutual Fire Insurance of German Householders. If one family’s barn burned, the others would help them rebuild.
That simple promise still runs the company today. Renamed Farmers Mutual of Scott County in 1919 and joined with Walcott Mutual Insurance Association in 1972, we’ve never stopped being what we started as — a mutual, owned by its members, run by neighbors.

Our history at a glance
Founded as the Mutual Fire Insurance of German Householders — farm families joining together to protect one another.
Reorganized and renamed Farmers Mutual of Scott County as the membership grew.
Merged with Walcott Mutual Insurance Association on June 1, taking the name we carry today.
Still policyholder-owned in Walcott, serving four eastern-Iowa counties.
Leadership
Walcott Mutual is guided by a board elected from the membership it serves.
